Read Recent Review of A ROSE AMONG THORNS - Tribute to Rosa Parks
at NATIONAL BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL 2009
in Winston Salem Journal:
Intimate: 'Rose' like a chat with Parks
By Susan Gilmor
JOURNAL REPORTER
Imagine sitting in your living room and having a cup of tea with one of the most influential
figures in American history.
That's what it's like to watch A Rose Among Thorns: A Tribute to Rosa Parks, a one-woman show
that had its last performance at this year's National Black Theatre Festival
last night at Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
Ella Joyce (Roc, My Wife & Kids, Bubba Ho-Tep) gives an inspiring and vivid performance
as Parks, 42, a black seamstress whose refusal to give up her seat on an Alabama bus
to a white man in 1955 sparked a boycott that led to one of the landmark cases in
the civil-rights movement.

South Florida is quickly becoming a Mecca for the Performing Arts. An intimate crowd witnessed Actress Ella Joyce launch the rollout of fund raising campaign for the Urban Theatre and Entertainment Festival and Awards 2008 at St. Paul AME Church. This festival is scheduled to take place July 29 - August 2nd 2008 in Sunny South Florida. The fact that this rollout took place over the MLK weekend has great signifigance. Dr. King and Rosa Parks share forever a place in history together. The Julia E. Brown Theatrical Association, Inc. and Community Capacity Builders, Inc. teamed up to launch these efforts.

Ella: Beauty emanates from deep within, from the soul, she says. There is an outer beauty that we, as females, carry, and of course, it attracts the opposite sex, its significant in that way, but theres a deeper meaning to beauty and thats when it emanates from within. Theres an old saying that the eyes are the window to the soul. And usually when I look at women of color, I look at whats emanating from our soul and thats what carries our beauty as a people. If you look into the eyes of our First Lady right now, she just radiates...just emanates with beauty. Shes loved and you can see that shes loved. She has a beautiful family, life is good and that radiates from her soul, right from her eyes. And so that is usually where beauty comes from for me, and for black women especially.
